How Interior Design Can Improve the Quality of Life

Most people think that us designers pick out fabric and colors and call it a day. Man, if that were the case, my job would be a whole heck of a lot easier!

When I was going to college, I remember someone asking me, "What are your classes going to be, finger painting and basketing weaving??" At the time, that really bothered me, because my major was actually known as being one of, if not the toughest at the school. I felt like I was always trying to prove to everyone that interior design isn't just something you can do. A lot of people don't know this, but there is a difference between a decorator and designer! You can't call yourself a designer unless you have a degree in interior design.

So what is even interior design? It's a combination of a lot of aspects. From construction documents to furniture and finish selection, there are a wide variety of tasks to do. There's also an element of the psychology behind the design. There's always a way you're choosing something and a why for everything. Contrary to popular belief, we don't just pick things because their pretty. (Well, of course that's got to be part of it!) Having things be practical and functional are the priority. We are problem solvers. We are design experts, and well, we are part-time best friends. You get to know your clients so well, that you bond and end up cultivating these great relationships with one another.

Here are some ways that interior design can facilitate a better life.

Utilize aspects to be more sustainable

With so many options out there, it can be hard to navigate the items that are actually good for the environment. We are versed in knowing various finishes, and systems to utilize sustainability. From countertop materials to plumbing fixtures, there are a lot of choices to select from!

Create a welcoming environment

This is one of my favorite things about interior design. I remember one of my first projects, I was doing an install, and had a big reveal for my client and her young son. I was showing her the living room, and she was so excited. We walked into the bedroom, and just after a couple of minutes, found her young son asleep on the bed. When he woke up to us coming in the room, he couldn't stop saying how great this place was. Those are the things that matter to me. The ones where you turn a house into a home and really take those personal aspects of a person, and relate them in their home.

Make things practical and functional

Sometimes things just don't work in a space, and sometimes you have kids and a dog and it's hard to balance how to make things look good, and how to make sure that you aren't replacing items every single year because of wear and tear. Let's not forget the actual flow and function of a space during a renovation project. We are trained to understand the best workflow of a space and how to take your lifestyle and implement it into the design.

Create a happy, healthy, holistic environment

Overall, our goal is to make you love your space and to feel comfortable in it. From that initial consultation, we take exactly what you love, and harness that into your home. I'm a true believer that your home should be a true reflection of yourself.

We help with organization

This is one of the aspects that I see people need the most help with! A lot of times it's figuring out what the right kind of storage for a space is. Sometimes, it's some built in's next to a fireplace and other times it's finding a place in the kitchen for the dog food. You just never know.

Regardless of how I feel on a negative day, I can actually see that we can make a difference in everyday life. We can change the way that people feel about their environment and facilitate happiness in people's homes.

Love you all!
