HOW TO MAKE A RUSTIC DOOR
So, this project came as a bit of surprise when I found out that there were 6 coats of different paint on the kitchen doors! SIX! I’m sorry, but whoever thought that it was a good idea to paint over the hinges and knobs was seriously mistaken. But don’t worry, the doors turned out better than I initially had imagined. Here’s the step by step process that I went through to get the doors to my liking.
USE A FLAME TO GET THE PAINT OFF OF THE HARDWARE
Okay, so I don’t recommend this at all, but Mike did this one for me…
GO BUY A PAINT STRIPPER
For this I just went to Home Depot and picked up some indoor safe citrus paint stripper. Even though I was doing this outside, I didn’t want to breathe in all the harsh chemicals that some of them have. Plus, this one smells like oranges, so why not?!
COAT ONE FACE OF THE DOOR WITH A THICK LAYER OF GEL
Follow the directions, as it says to wait 30 minutes to strap off the paint. I used a rag to apply, but you can be more civilized and use a paint brush like the instructions say. I realized that the longer that I waited, the more layers of paint came off. The first time I waited 30 minutes, and one layer of paint came off. By accident, I left the second coat on over-night, (it started to downpour and thunder and lightning), and the next day, a few layers came off!
Pro Tip: Wait at least until the paint is bubbling.
KEEP REAPPLYING THE GEL UNTIL YOU GET DOWN TO THE PAINT COLOR YOU WANT
I mean, this is for all of you that have older houses and have doors that have a million and one colors on them, like these guys. I loved the blue color, but I wanted some wood. So, I scrapped it down to the blue color
WIPE OFF ANY EXCESS GEL OR PAINT CHUNKS
Enough said. I used a clean old rag for this.
SAND
I broke out the belt sander and went to town. I found spots that still had some yellow, and some spots that I wanted the wood to shine through.
CLEAN
Use another clean rag and brush off all the excess paint and dust collected.
POLY
I used a clear polyurethane to coat this. This is important so that you don’t have paint chips flaking and getting all over the place.
REAPPLY THE HARDWARE + HANG THE DOOR UP
BOOM DONE!
Feel free to reach out with any questions and let me know if you’ve tried this!
Cheers!
